an autosomal recessive disorder having onset at birth or soon afterwards, characterized clinically by severe generalized blistering, particularly around the mouth or on the scalp, trunk, diaper area, or lower limbs, with extensive denudation that may be associated with secondary infection and death from septicemia, nail dystrophy, and dental dysplasia. Growth retardation and refractory anemia are frequent findings in those who survive. On electron microscopy, a cleavage plane between the plasma membranes of the basal cells and the basement membrane is seen. Called also e. bullosa letalis and Herlitz's disease.
