An object orbiting the Sun that is smaller than a major planet (tens of meters to about 1,000 km diameter), but shows no evidence of an atmosphere or other types of activity associated with comets. Most asteroids are located in a belt between Mars and Jupiter from 2.2 to 3.3 AU from the Sun.
