Acting for the sake of other people's interests. There are two forms. Ethical altruism: people should act with other people's interests in mind, and learn this through experience. Psychological altruism: people are compelled to act with other people's interests in mind, because altruism is instinctive.

| alternating current |
The characteristic of electricity in which the current flow in a circuit changes direction (180 degrees). Each change is called a cycle. The number of cycles during a given time period is called frequency. The standard frequency in the United States is 60 cycles per second.

Various methods of healing, eg homeopathy, Chinese herbal medicine, that are not regarded as orthodox by the medical profession. Many alternative medicines have no proven benefit in the treatment of allergic rhinitis.

Alt is the name of a modifier bit which a keyboard input character may have. To make a character Alt, type it while holding down the ALT key. Such characters are given names that start with Alt- (usually written A- for short). (Note that many terminals have a key labeled ALT which is really a META key.) Alt.
