| monkey-pot | <zoology> The fruit of two South American trees (Lecythis Ollaria, and L. Zabucajo), which have for their fruit large, pot-shaped, woody capsules containing delicious nuts, and opening almost explosively by a circular lid at the top. Vases and pots are made of this capsule. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| monkey's puzzle | <botany> A lofty coniferous Chilian tree (Araucaria imbricata), the branches of which are so crowded and intertwisted "as to puzzle a monkey to climb." The edible nuts are over an inch long, and are called pinon by the Chilians. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |
| mammary tumour virus | <organism, virology> Retrovirus that induces mammary carcinoma in mice. Isolated from highly inbred strains that had very high incidence of the tumours, after the discovery that the disease was transmitted by nursing mothers in milk. Endogenous provirus present in germ line of all inbred mice. Transcription of the provirus is regulated by a viral promoter that increases transcription in response to glucocorticoid hormones. May transform by proviral insertion activating the cellular int 1 oncogene (18 Nov 1997) |
| mammary tumour virus of mice | Member of the retrovirus subfamily Oncornavirinae, antigenically distinct from the murine leukaemia-sarcoma complex, that is associated with adenocarcinomatous tumours of the mammary gland, commonly latent in wild and laboratory mice and causing cancer only in genetically susceptible strains under certain hormonal influences. Synonym: Bittner agent, Bittner virus, Bittner's milk factor, mammary cancer virus of mice, milk factor, mouse mammary tumour virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| RNA tumour virus | The family of retroviruses (Retroviridae) that can cause tumours. They are enveloped by membrane derived from the plasma membrane of the host cell, from which they are released by budding without lysing the cell. Within each virion is a pair of single stranded RNA molecules. Replication involves a DNA intermediate made on an RNA template by the enzyme reverse transcriptase. (18 Nov 1997) |
| mouse mammary tumour virus | Member of the retrovirus subfamily Oncornavirinae, antigenically distinct from the murine leukaemia-sarcoma complex, that is associated with adenocarcinomatous tumours of the mammary gland, commonly latent in wild and laboratory mice and causing cancer only in genetically susceptible strains under certain hormonal influences. Synonym: Bittner agent, Bittner virus, Bittner's milk factor, mammary cancer virus of mice, milk factor, mouse mammary tumour virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mouse parotid tumour virus | <virology> A papovavirus (genus Polyomavirus, family Papovaviridae) which is a DNA tumour virus with very small genome. Polyoma was isolated from mice, in which it causes no obvious disease, but when injected at high titre into baby rodents, including mice, it causes tumours of a wide variety of histological types (hence polyoma). In vitro, infected mouse cells are permissive for virus replication and thus are killed, whilst hamster cells undergo abortive infection and at a low frequency become transformed. It is capable of producing parotid tumours in mice and sarcomas in hamsters as well as tumours in other laboratory animals. Synonym: mouse parotid tumour virus. (22 Sep 2002) |
| DNA tumour virus | <oncology, virology> Virus with DNA genome that can cause tumours in animals. Examples are Papovaviridae, Adenoviridae and Epstein Barr virus. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tumour virus | <oncology, virology> Virus capable of inducing tumours. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tumour virus infections | Infections produced by oncogenic viruses. The infections caused by DNA viruses are less numerous but more diverse than those caused by the RNA oncogenic viruses. (12 Dec 1998) |
| bovine virus diarrhoea virus | A virus of the genus Pestivirus, in the family Togaviridae, causing bovine virus diarrhoea; New York, Oregon, and Indiana strains of the virus are recognised. Synonym: mucosal disease virus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acinar cell tumour | A solid and cystic tumour of the pancreas, occurring in young women; tumour cells contain zymogen granules. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute splenic tumour | Acute splenitis, enlargement, and softening of the spleen, usually due to bacteraemia or severe bacterial toxaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adenoid tumour | Adenoma, or neoplasm with glandlike spaces. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adenomatoid odontogenic tumour | A benign epithelial odontogenic tumour appearing radiographically as a well-circumscribed radiolucent-radiopaque lesion usually surrounding the crown of an impacted tooth in an adolescent or young adult; characterised histologically by columnar cells organised in a duct-like configuration interspersed with spindle-shaped cells and amyloid-like deposition that gradually undergoes dystrophic calcification. Synonym: adenoameloblastoma, ameloblastic adenomatoid tumour. (05 Mar 2000) |
