| capsula interna | <anatomy, neurology> A massive layer (8 to 10 mm thick) of white matter separating the caudate nucleus and thalamus (medial) from the more laterally situated lentiform nucleus (globus pallidus and putamen). It consists of 1) fibres ascending from the thalamus to the cerebral cortex that compose, among others, the visual, auditory, and somatic sensory radiations, and 2) fibres descending from the cerebral cortex to the thalamus, subthalamic region, midbrain, hindbrain, and spinal cord. The internal capsule is the major route by which the cerebral cortex is connected with the brainstem and spinal cord. Laterally and superiorly it is continuous with the corona radiata which forms a major part of the cerebral hemisphere's white matter; caudally and medially it continues, much reduced in size, as the crus cerebri which contains, among others, the pyramidal tract. On horizontal section it appears in the form of a V opening out laterally; the V's obtuse angle is called genu (knee). Its anterior and posterior limbs, respectively, the crus anterior and crus posterior. Synonym: capsula interna. (05 Mar 2000) |

| pachymeningitis interna | Inflammation of the inner surface of the dura mater. Synonym: internal meningitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| vagina interna nervi optici | <anatomy, nerve> The innermost sheath around the optic nerve, continuous with the leptomeninges (pia-arachnoid) and including a cerebrospinal fluid-filled intervaginal space, continuous with the subarachnoid space. Synonym: vagina interna nervi optici. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rami intercostalis anteriores arteria thoracica interna | One of the arteries supplying the anterior portions of the intercostal spaces of the thoracic wall. Anterior intercostal arteries 1-6 arise as branches of the internal thoracic artery; 7-11 arise as branches of the musculophrenic artery. Synonym: rami intercostales anteriores, rami intercostalis anteriores arteria thoracica interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| membrana intercostalis interna | The membrane that replaces the internal intercostal muscle posteriorly, medial to the angles of the ribs. Synonym: membrana intercostalis interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| crista occipitalis interna | A ridge running from the internal occipital protuberance to the posterior margin of the foramen magnum, giving attachment to the falx cerebelli. Synonym: crista occipitalis interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| haematorrhachis interna | A haemorrhage (area of internal bleeding) which extends into the spinal cord, occurs usually as a result of injury. (09 Oct 1997) |
| protuberantia occipitalis interna | A projection from about the centre of the cruciform eminence on the inner surface of the occipital bone. Synonym: protuberantia occipitalis interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hyperostosis frontalis interna | <radiology> Overgrowth of bone at the inner table of the frontal bone, usually bilateral and symmetrical, chiefly in females greater than 35 y.o., no clinical siginificance, unknown aetiology, irregular cortical thickening of the frontal area, spares areas occupied by superior sagital sinus and venous channels, may be 1 cm or thicker, occasionaly extends to parietal bones and orbital roofs, hyperostosis calvariae diffusa: variant of HFI: more diffuse thickening of vault (involving both tables) see: increased skull thickness (12 Dec 1998) |
| ophthalmoplegia interna | Paralysis affecting only the sphincter muscle of the pupil and the ciliary muscle. Synonym: internal ophthalmoplegia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| organa genitalia feminina interna | The internal feminine genital organs, the ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, and vagina. Synonym: organa genitalia feminina interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| organa genitalia masculina interna | The internal masculine genital organs, the testes, epididymides, deferent ducts, seminal vesicles, prostate, and bulbourethral glands. Synonym: organa genitalia masculina interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| otitis interna | Inflammation of the inner ear. (12 Dec 1998) |
| theca interna | <embryology> The inner cellular and vascular layer of the vesicular ovarian follicle. There is evidence that the epithelioid cells produce oestrogen and contribute to the formation of the corpus luteum after ovulation. Synonym: theca interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| theca interna cone | The conical thickening of thecal cells of an ovarian follicle with its apex pointed toward the surface. (05 Mar 2000) |
