A varix (pl. varices) are periods of shell growth where thickened lips are formed. Old lips are previous varices, the last formed is the last varix. Varices often have pronounced sculpture -- spines, knobs, webs, etc. The number of varices per whorl is of taxonomic importance. Not all muricids form varices. Trivaricate - 3 varices per whorl, etc.
