van der Waals forces The physical forces of attraction and repulsion existing between molecules and which are responsible for the cohesion of molecular crystals and liquids. The forces stem partly from dipole-dipole, or dipole-induced-dipole interactions; however, even nonpolar molecules and atoms exert a certain attraction on one another. Van der Waals forces act only over relatively short distances, and are proportional to the inverse of the seventh power of the intermolecular distances.

van der Waals forces arise from the electrical attraction between nonuniform charge distributions in atoms and molecules. They enable atoms and molecules to form solids without sharing or transferring electrons.

van der Waals forces after JD van der Waals, 1873): atomic and molecular attraction forces arising from dipole effects (between permanent dipoles), induction effects (between permanent and induced dipoles) and dispersion effects (between induced dipoles); see also Israelachvili (1991): Chap. 11 - van der Waals Forces between Surfaces.
