Tympanometry is not a hearing test. It measures the movement of the eardrum (tympanic membrane) and the ability of the middle ear system to transfer sound to the inner ear. During the test a probe is placed into the ear canal, and there is a slight change in air pressure. The feeling experienced is similar to the air pressure change sometimes felt when riding in an elevator. Tympanometry can determine if there is middle ear fluid that is affecting the hearing test results.
