| tunica elastica | <anatomy> Tunica media of large arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica externa | <anatomy> The outer of two or more enveloping layers of any structure, specifically, the outer fibroelastic coat of a blood or lymph vessel. Synonym: tunica extima. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica externa oculi | The outer layer of the eyeball composed of the sclera and cornea. Synonym: tunica fibrosa bulbi, tunica externa oculi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica externa thecae folliculi | <embryology> The external fibrous layer of the theca of a well-developed vesicular ovarian follicle; the cells and fibres are arranged in a concentric fashion. Synonym: theca externa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica extima | <anatomy> The outer of two or more enveloping layers of any structure, specifically, the outer fibroelastic coat of a blood or lymph vessel. Synonym: tunica extima. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica fibrosa | Any fibrous envelope of a part. The fibrous capsule of an organ. Synonym: stratum fibrosum, tunica fibrosa, capsula fibrosa. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica fibrosa bulbi | The outer layer of the eyeball composed of the sclera and cornea. Synonym: tunica fibrosa bulbi, tunica externa oculi. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica fibrosa hepatis | A layer of connective tissue ensheathing the hepatic artery, portal vein, and bile ducts as these ramify within the liver. Synonym: capsula fibrosa perivascularis, perivascular fibrous capsule. Connective tissue capsule surrounding the outer surface of the liver, but continuous with septae of some animals which divide parenchyme into lobule, and with the perivascular fibrous capsule at the porta hepatis. Synonym: tunica fibrosa hepatis, Glisson's capsule. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica fibrosa lienis | <anatomy> An alternate term for fibrous capsule of spleen, fibrous capsule of spleen. (05 Mar 2000) |

| tunica fibrosa splenis | The fibrous capsule of the spleen, containing collagen, elastic fibres, and smooth muscle. Synonym: tunica fibrosa splenis, tunica fibrosa lienis, capsula lienis, tunica propria lienis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica interna bulbi | Light sensitive layer of the eye. In vertebrates, looking from outside, there are four major cell layers: (i) the outer neural retina, which contains neurons (ganglion cells, amacrine cells, bipolar cells) as well as blood vessels, (ii) the photoreceptor layer, a single layer of rods and cones, (iii) the pigmented retinal epithelium (PRE or RPE), (iv) the choroid, composed of connective tissue, fibroblasts and including a well vascularised layer, the chorio capillaris, underlying the basal lamina of the PRE. Behind the choroid is the sclera, a thick organ capsule. In molluscs (especially cephalopods such as the squid) the retina has the light sensitive cells as the outer layer with the neural and supporting tissues below. See: retinal rods, retinal cones, rhodopsin. (18 Nov 1997) |
| tunica interna thecae folliculi | <embryology> The inner cellular and vascular layer of the vesicular ovarian follicle. There is evidence that the epithelioid cells produce oestrogen and contribute to the formation of the corpus luteum after ovulation. Synonym: theca interna. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tunica intima | <anatomy> The innermost coat of blood vessels, consisting of a thin lining of endothelial cells longitudinally oriented and continuous with the endothelium of capillaries on the one hand and the endocardium of the heart on the other. (12 Dec 1998) |
