tumor marker a chemical reading in the blood or other body fluids which is associated with cancerous activity in the body. They may be measured in women with metastases to see if there is response to treatment. They are not sensitive enough to be used for diagnostic purposes.

tumor marker a chemical substance found in increased amounts in the body fluids of some cancer patients. The presence of a tumor marker in the blood for a specific cancer can be an indication that cancer is present in the body. Tumor markers can be used as part of the diagnostic process but generally cannot provide a definitive diagnosis. Tumor markers are also used to monitor the progress of treatment as well as possible recurrence of cancer after treatment.
