| tubal colic | Lower abdominal pain due to spasmodic contraction of the oviduct excited by a blood clot, other irritant, or the injection of gas or oil. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| tubal dysmenorrhoea | A form of secondary dysmenorrhoea due to stenosis or other abnormal condition of the fallopian tubes. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tubal extremity of ovary | The rounded lateral end of the ovary, usually directed toward the infundibulum of the uterine tube. Synonym: extremitas tubaria ovarii, lateral pole. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tubal folds of uterine tubes | Many longitudinal folds in the mucous membrane of the uterine (fallopian) tube. Synonym: plicae tubariae tubae uterinae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tubal infantilism | A term descriptive of a corkscrew-like fallopian tube as seen in foetal life. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tubal ligation | <gynaecology, procedure> A surgical procedure that involves ligation (closure) of the fallopian tubes to prevent an unfertilized egg from reaching the uterus. A method of sterilisation. Believed to have better than 99% effectiveness. This surgery can be performed through a laparoscope, using a small abdominal incision to allow passage of the fibreoptic scope. most women can return to work within a few days after the procedure. (27 Sep 1997) |
| tubal pregnancy | <obstetrics> An ectopic pregnancy that involves the development of the embryo within the fallopian tube. This can result in a surgical emergency when the developing embryo reaches a critical size. (27 Sep 1997) |
| tubal prominence | A ridge in the naso-pharyngeal wall posterior to the opening of the auditory (eustachian) tube, caused by the projection of the cartilaginous portion of this tube. Synonym: eustachian cushion, tubal prominence. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tubal tonsil | A collection of lymphoid nodules near the pharyngeal opening of the auditory tube. Synonym: tonsilla tubaria, eustachian tonsil, Gerlach's tonsil. (05 Mar 2000) |
| accelerator factor | <chemical> Heat- and storage-labile plasma glycoprotein which accelerates the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin in blood coagulation. Factor v accomplishes this by forming a complex with factor xa, phospholipid, and calcium (prothrombinase complex). Deficiency of factor v leads to owren's disease. Chemical name: Blood-coagulation factor V (12 Dec 1998) |
| acetate replacement factor | <biochemistry> 1,2 dithiolane 3 valeric acid. Regarded as a coenzyme in the oxoglutarate dehydrogenase complex of the citric acid cycle. Involved generally in oxidative decarboxylations of _ keto acids. A growth factor for some organisms. (18 Nov 1997) |
| adrenal weight factor | A postulated substance of adenohypophysial origin responsible for maintenance of the weight of the adrenal cortex. (05 Mar 2000) |
| adrenocorticotropic releasing factor | Hormone produced by hypothalamus that causes pituitary to secrete adrenocorticotropic hormone. (05 Mar 2000) |
| a-factor | <molecular biology> A protein which is found in the bacterial genus Streptomyces that helps start the production of streptomycin and the process of morphological differentiation. It is used in biotechnology to induce these functions in mutant strains of Streptomyces that cannot produce it themselves. (09 Feb 1998) |
| angiogenesis factor | Substance causing proliferation of new blood vessels. It is found in tissues with high metabolic requirements, such as the retina, and in certain cancers. The factor is also released by hypoxic macrophages at the edges or outer surfaces of wounds and initiates revascularization in wound healing. (12 Dec 1998) |
