a self-limited louse-borne rickettsial disease due to Bartonella quintana, transmitted by the body louse, Pediculus humanus corporis, and characterized by intermittent fever, generalized aches and pains, particularly severe in the shins, chills, sweating, vertigo, malaise, typhuslike rash, and multiple relapses. It was first recognized during the trench warfare of World War I and also was a major problem among military personnel in Europe in World War II; the same infection is endemic in Mexico, North Africa, Eastern Europe, and parts of Asia. Called also five-day f., Meuse f., quintan f., shin bone f., Wolhynia f., His' disease, His-Werner disease, and Werner-His disease.
