gastroenteritis <gastroenterology, pathology> An acute inflammation of the lining of the stomach and intestines, characterised by anorexia, nausea, diarrhoea, abdominal pain and weakness, which has various causes, including food poisoning due to infection with such organisms as Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Salmonella species, consumption of irritating food or drink or psychological factors such as anger, stress and fear.
Synonym: enterogastritis.
(18 Nov 1997)
gastroenteritis virus, murine A species of the coronavirus genus causing hepatitis in mice. Four strains have been identified as mhv 1, mhv 2, mhv 3, and mhv 4 (also known as jhm, which is neurotropic and causes disseminated encephalomyelitis with demyelination as well as focal liver necrosis).
(12 Dec 1998)
gastroenteritis virus type A A RNA virus, about 27 nm in diameter, which has not been cultured in vitro; it is the cause of epidemic nonbacterial gastroenteritis; at least five antigenically distinct serotypes have been recognised, including the Norwalk agent. These viruses are probably classified with the Caliciviruses in the family Caliciviridae.
Synonym: gastroenteritis virus type A.
(05 Mar 2000)
gastroenteritis virus type B <virology> Genus of the Reoviridae having a double layered capsid and 11 double stranded RNA molecules in the genome. They have a wheel like appearance in the electron microscope and cause acute diarrhoeal disease in their mammalian and avian hosts.
Probably the most important cause of severe dehydrating diarrhoea in children under three years of age worldwide.
Symptoms include nausea, vomiting, low-grade fever and diarrhoea. Aggressive fluid replacement is generally required.
(27 Sep 1997)
viral gastroenteritis <pathology> An inflammatory condition of the intestines that results from an infection with a virus. Rotavirus is a common cause. Abdominal pain, diarrhoea, nausea and vomiting are common symptoms.
(27 Sep 1997)
infantile gastroenteritis An endemic viral gastroenteritis of young children (6 months to 12 years) that is especially widespread during winter, caused by strains of rotavirus; the incubation period is 2 to 4 days, with symptoms lasting 3 to 5 days, including abdominal pain, diarrhoea, fever, and vomiting.
Synonym: infantile gastroenteritis.

eosinophilic gastroenteritis <radiology> Eosinophilic infiltration of mucosa, submucosa, and muscularis of small bowel with or without stomach, stomach (almost always limited to antrum): enlarged gastric rugae, cobblestone nodules, polyps (=mucosal type), rigid wall with narrowed antrum/pylorus, bulky inramural mass up to 9 cm (=muscular type), wet stomach, ulcers rare, may have ascites, small bowel (predominantly jejunum), thickening and distortion of folds (=mucosal type), effacement of mucosa and narrowing of lumen (=muscular type), prognosis: tendency to spontaneous remission, treatment: steroids; removal of sensitizing agent

Synonym: gastroenteritis virus type A.
(05 Mar 2000)
epidemic nonbacterial gastroenteritis An epidemic, highly communicable but rather mild disease of sudden onset, caused by the epidemic gastroenteritis virus (especially Norwalk agent), with an incubation period of 16 to 48 hours and a duration of 1 to 2 days, which affects all age groups; infection is associated with some fever, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, and headache, one or another of which may be predominant.
Synonym: acute infectious nonbacterial gastroenteritis.

african swine fever A usually fatal iridovirus infection of pigs, characterised by fever, cough, diarrhoea, haemorrhagic lymph nodes, and oedema of the gallbladder.
(12 Dec 1998)
african swine fever-like viruses An unnamed, unclassified genus of DNA viruses with a single species: african swine fever virus.
(12 Dec 1998)
african swine fever virus The lone species of the genus african swine fever-like viruses. The virus causes a fatal disease among domestic pigs in africa and a less virulent infection in europe. The virus is present in soft ticks (ornithodoros moubata), warthogs, or domestic pigs. Originally listed as a species of iridoviridae, the virus exhibits some similarities to poxviridae but its differences warranted placement in a separate genus of an, as yet unknown, family.
(12 Dec 1998)
atrophic rhinitis of swine A disease manifested by atrophy, shrinkage, and often almost complete disappearance of the turbinate bones, accompanied by distortion of the facial bones, sneezing, and stunting of the growth of young animals; caused principally by the bacterium Bordetella bronchiseptica.
