| nucleus tractus spinalis nervi trigemini | The long sensory nucleus extending from the caudal border of the pontine sensory nucleus of the trigeminus down through the lateral region of the rhombencephalon into the upper three segments of the spinal cord's dorsal horn; it receives the fibres of the sensory root of the trigeminal nerve which descend along its lateral border as the spinal tract of trigeminal nerve. Synonym: nucleus tractus spinalis nervi trigemini, descending nucleus of the trigeminus, spinal nucleus of the trigeminus. (05 Mar 2000) |

| tractus spinalis nervi trigemini | <anatomy, nerve> A compact fibre bundle, comma-shaped on transverse section, composed of primary sensory fibres of the portio major of the trigeminal nerve, descending from the level of the entrance of the trigeminus in the upper pons down through the dorsolateral region of the rhombencephalic tegmentum along the lateral side of the descending or spinal nucleus of the trigeminus, emerging on the dorsolateral surface of the lower medulla oblongata as the tuberculum cinereum, and continuing as far as the second cervical segment of the spinal cord. Its fibres are distributed to the descending or spinal nucleus of the trigeminus. Synonym: tractus spinalis nervi trigemini, descending tract of trigeminal nerve, tractus descendens nervi trigemini. | venae medullae oblongatae | Several veins draining the medulla oblongata; they are tributaries of the anterior spinal vein and the petrosal vein. Synonym: veins of medulla oblongata. (05 Mar 2000) |
| raphe medullae oblongatae | The seamlike median zone of the medulla oblongata, marked by intercrossing fibre bundles among which lie scattered neuronal cell bodies. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pyramis medullae oblongatae | An elongated, white prominence on the ventral surface of the medulla oblongata on either side along the anterior median fissure, corresponding to the pyramidal tract. Synonym: pyramis medullae oblongatae, anterior column of medulla oblongata, anterior pyramid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sulcus medianus posterior medullae oblongatae | The longitudinal groove marking the posterior midline of the medulla oblongata; continuous below with the posterior median sulcus of the spinal cord. Synonym: sulcus medianus posterior medullae oblongatae, posterior median fissure of the medulla oblongata. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus gigantocellularis medullae oblongatae | One of the three major nuclei of the reticular formation of the brainstem. Synonym: nucleus gigantocellularis medullae oblongatae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus lateralis medullae oblongatae | A group of cells in the medulla oblongata, located between the inferior olive and the descending trigeminal nucleus, receiving fibres from the spinal cord and motor cortex and projecting to the cerebellum. Synonym: nucleus lateralis medullae oblongatae, lateral reticular nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| fissura mediana anterior medullae oblongatae | The longitudinal groove in the midline of the anterior aspect of the medulla oblongata; it is the medullary equivalent of the anterior median fissure of the spinal cord and ends at the foramen caecum posterius; its caudal part is obliterated by the decussation of the pyramids. Synonym: fissura mediana anterior medullae oblongatae, anteromedian groove. (05 Mar 2000) |
| foramen caecum medullae oblongatae | <anatomy> A small triangular depression at the lower boundary of the pons that marks the upper limit of the median fissure of the medulla oblongata. Synonym: foramen caecum posterius, Vicq d'Azyr's foramen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arachnoidea mater spinalis | That portion of the arachnoid which lies within the vertebral canal and surrounds the spinal cord and the vertebral portion of the subarachnoid space. It extends from the foramen magnum above to the S-2 vertebral level. Since the spinal cord ends at the L-2 vertebral level, a wide separation occurs between the arachnoid and pia mater, the lumbar cistern, filled with cerebrospinal fluid in which the cauda equina is suspended. Synonym: arachnoidea mater spinalis, spinal part of arachnoid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria spinalis anterior | <anatomy, artery> Origin, intracranial part of vertebral; distribution, spinal cord and pia mater; anastomoses, spinal of intercostal and lumbar arteries. Synonym: arteria spinalis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arteria spinalis posterior | <anatomy, artery> Origin, vertebral; distribution, medulla, spinal cord, and pia mater; anastomoses, spinal branches of intercostal arteries. Synonym: arteria spinalis posterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ramus ventralis nervi spinalis | <anatomy, nerve> The larger, anterolaterally-directed major terminal branch (with the dorsal primary ramus) of all 31 pairs of mixed spinal nerves, formed at the intervertebral foramen. Most ventral primary rami, especially those involved in the innervation of the limbs, participate in the formation of the major nerve plexuses (cervical, brachial, and lumbosacral) and lose their identities. Most in the thoracic region, however, remain separate from adjacent rami to become the intercostal and subcostal nerves. Ventral primary rami provide innervation to the anterolateral body wall and trunk. Nomina Anatomica lists ventral primary rami as "rami ventrales" for each group of spinal nerves: 1) cervical (nervorum cervicalium ), 2) thoracic (nervorum thoracicorum ), 3) lumbar (nervorum lumbalium ), 4) sacral (nervorum sacralium )m, and 5) coccygeal (nervi coccygei ). Synonym: ramus ventralis nervi spinalis, anterior primary division. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pars spinalis nervi accessorii | <anatomy> An alternate term for spinal root of accessory nerve. (05 Mar 2000) |
