Of the three characterised, only timp-1 and timp-2 appear to have related primary structures and inhibitory properties. They influence the activation of the prometalloproteinase and act to modulate proteolysis of extracellular matrix, notably during tissue remodeling and inflammatory processes. tissue inhibitor of-metalloproteinase-3 <chemical> A member of the family of tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinases. It is a 21 kD, nonglycosylated protein. Timp-3 does not show a high degree of structural similarity unlike timp-1 and timp-2 which are structurally similar. However, it does possess a high degree of structural similarity with that of chicken timp-3 (chimp-3). Human timp-3 is of particular concern because of its potential role in cancer, arthritis, and eye diseases.

granulation tissue Highly vascularised tissue that replaces the initial fibrin clot in a wound. Vascularisation is by ingrowth of capillary endothelium from the surrounding vasculature. The tissue is also rich in fibroblasts (that will eventually produce the fibrous tissue) and leucocytes.

granule cell of connective tissue <cell biology, immunology> Resident cell of connective tissue that contains many granules rich in histamine and heparan sulphate.
Release of histamine from mast cells is responsible for the immediate reddening of the skin in a weal and flare response. Very similar to basophils and possibly derived from the same stem cells.
Two types of mast cells are now recognised, those from connective tissue and a distinct set of mucosal mast cells, the activities of the latter are T-cell dependent.

Repopulation is achieved by guiding the periodontal ligament progenitor cells to reproduce in the desired location by blocking contact of epithelial and gingival connective tissues with the root during healing. This blocking is accomplished by using synthetic membranes or collagen membranes.

mixed connective tissue disease <syndrome> A syndrome with overlapping clinical features of systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma, polymyositis, and Raynaud's phenomenon.
The disease is differentially characterised by high serum titres of antibodies to ribonuclease-sensitive extractable (saline soluble) nuclear antigen (nuclear ribonucleoprotein) and a speckled epidermal nuclear staining pattern on direct immunofluorescence.
A more modern term for this condition is the undifferentiated connective tissues disease.

tissue plasminogen activator tPA. A protein that is made by the body and that helps dissolve blood clots. It can also be made in the laboratory and is used in the treatment of heart attack and stroke. It is also being studied in the treatment of cancer. tPA belongs to the family of drugs called systemic thrombolytic agents.
