| thermalisation | <radiobiology> Also known as slowing-down, this is the process (generally arising from collisions) by which fast (superthermal) particles give up energy to the plasma and slow down to thermal speeds. (09 Oct 1997) |
thermal radiation
Electromagnetic radiation emitted by all matter in thermal equilibrium as the result of the thermal excitation of its molecules.

thermal
a small rising parcel of warm air produced when the earth's surface is unevenly heated. A thermal forms when air molecules bounce against the earth's hot surface, absorb heat, and becomes lighter than the surrounding air, which allows it to rise. These thermals "bubble" upward to transfer energy to higher levels of the atmosphere.

thermal
A relatively small-scale, rising air current produced when the Earth's surface is heated. Thermals are a common source of low level turbulence for aircraft.

thermal diffusion
A phenomenon in which a temperature gradient in a mixture of fluids gives rise to a flow of one constituent relative to the mixture as a whole. Also known as thermodiffusion.
