synchrotron Ring-shaped accelerator into which particles generally coming from a linear accelerator are injected. The magnetic field and the frequency of the acceleration voltage are increased simultaneously so that the orbit remains at a constant radius during the acceleration. Very high energies can be achieved and variable energies and intensities obtained at each pulse.
