frontal branch of superficial temporal artery <anatomy, artery> Terminal branch of superficial temporal artery (with parietal branch) supplying anterolateral scalp and underlying musculature, periosteum, and outer table of cranium; anastomosis: across midline with contralateral partner; supratrochlear and supraorbital arteries.
Synonym: ramus frontalis arteriae temporalis superficialis.

ascending cervical artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, usually a terminal branch of the thyrocervical trunk (along with interior thyroid artery); distribution, muscles of neck and spinal cord; anastomoses, branches of vertebral, occipital, ascending pharyngeal, and deep cervical.
Synonym: arteria cervicalis ascendens, cervicalis ascendens.

cervical part of internal carotid artery <anatomy, artery> The unbranched portion located in the neck.
Synonym: pars cervicalis arteriae carotidis internae.
(05 Mar 2000)
deep branch of the transverse cervical artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, subclavian or as the deep branch of the transverse cervical; distribution, passes deep to the rhomboid muscles, supplying them and other muscles and skin along the vertebral border of the scapula; anastomoses, suprascapular and scapular circumflex.
Synonym: arteria dorsalis scapulae, rami profundi arteriae transversae cervicis, ramus profundus arteriae transversae colli, arteria scapularis dorsalis, arteria scapularis descendens, deep branch of the transverse cervical artery, descending scapular artery, ramus profundus arteria scapularis descendens.

deep cervical artery <anatomy, artery> Origin, terminal branch of costocervical trunk (along with superior intercostal artery); distribution, posterior deep muscles of neck; anastomoses, branches of occipital, ascending cervical, and vertebral.
Synonym: arteria cervicalis profunda.

anastomotic branch of middle meningeal artery to lacrimal artery <anatomy, artery> A branch of the middle meningeal artery arising in the cranial cavity which runs anteriorly through the superior orbital fissure to anastomose with the lacrimal artery.
See: orbital branch of middle meningeal artery.
Synonym: ramus anastomoticus arteriae meningeae mediae cum lacrimali.

greater superficial petrosal nerve <anatomy, nerve> The parasympathetic root of the pterygopalatine ganglion; a branch from the genu of the facial nerve exiting via the hiatus of the facial canal and running in a groove on the anterior surface of the petrous part of the temporal bone beside the foramen lacerum to join the deep petrosal nerve, thus forming the nerve of the pterygoid canal, which passes through the pterygoid canal to reach the pterygopalatine ganglion.
Synonym: nervus petrosus major, greater petrosal nerve.

superficial angioma <dermatology> Red or purple-coloured vascular skin markings that develop shortly after birth. Most are usually painless and benign and sharply demarcated from surrounding skin, usually located on the head and neck, and grow rapidly.
It is caused by proliferation of immature capillary vessels in active stroma, and is usually present at birth or occurs within the first two or three months of life.
Some lesions (cavernous haemangioma) will disappear or become harder to see as the child approaches school age.
Localised steroid injections have been used successfully to reduce the size of a birthmark but generally they undergo spontaneous regression and involution without scarring and normally require no treatment.
(07 Mar 2000)
superficial back muscles Muscles originating from the vertebral column and having their fleshy bellies located in the back, but inserting onto the appendicular skeleton of the upper limb or the ribs. They are not innervated by dorsal primary rami of spinal nerves, as are the deep or true muscles of the back; includes the trapezius muscle (innervated by spinal accessory nerve) and latissimus dorsi, rhomboids, levator scapulae, and thoracic muscles (innervated by ventral primary rami of spinal nerves, or derivatives thereof).
