| subacute hepatitis | <pathology> This is a form of continuing liver inflammation that results in liver cell death. Causes include viral infection (hepatitis D, hepatitis B, hepatitis C), autoimmune disease, drug ingestion or metabolic causes. Chronic active hepatitis will lead to hepatic failure and death in a small percentage of these patients. (27 Sep 1997) |

| subacute inclusion body encephalitis | <neurology> Chronic progressive illness seen in children a few years after measles infection and involving demyelination of the cerebral cortex. Virus apparently persists in brain cells: usually considered a slow virus disease. (18 Nov 1997) |
| subacute inflammation | An inflammation that is intermediate in duration between that of an acute inflammation and that of a chronic inflammation, usually persisting longer than 3 or 4 weeks. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute lymphocyte thyroiditis | A subacute variant of Hashimoto's thyroiditis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute necrotizing encephalomyelopathy | A rare fatal disorder, primarily of children, being both acute and chronic in onset, manifested primarily as brainstem dysfunction, with ataxia, cranial nerve palsies, pseudobulbar palsy, hemi-or quadriplegia, mental deterioration, and involuntary movements; deficiencies of pyruvate dehydrogenase or cytochrome C oxydase have been found in some patients; pathologically, there is widespread symmetric necrosis involving much of the brainstem; these changes are similar to those seen with Wernicke encephalopathy. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute necrotizing myelitis | A disorder of the lower spinal cord in adult males resulting in progressive paraplegia. Synonym: angiodysgenetic myelomalacia, Foix-Alajouanine myelitis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute nephritis | Undesirable term for glomerulonephritis with proteinuria, haematuria and azotemia persisting for many weeks; renal changes are variable, including those of rapidly progressive and membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis. Synonym: subacute nephritis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute rheumatism | A mild but usually protracted form of acute rheumatic fever, often resistant to treatment. (05 Mar 2000) |
| subacute sclerosing leukoencephalitis | <neurology> Chronic progressive illness seen in children a few years after measles infection and involving demyelination of the cerebral cortex. Virus apparently persists in brain cells: usually considered a slow virus disease. (18 Nov 1997) |
| subacute sclerosing panencephalitis | <neurology> Chronic progressive illness seen in children a few years after measles infection and involving demyelination of the cerebral cortex. Virus apparently persists in brain cells: usually considered a slow virus disease. (18 Nov 1997) |
| subacute spongiform encephalopathy | A form of spongiform encephalopathy that is associated with a "slow virus", which to date has not been adequately described, is transmissible, and has a rapidly progressive, fatal course; e.g., Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, kuru, Gerstmann-Straussler syndrome, scrapie. (05 Mar 2000) |
| thyroiditis, subacute | Inflammation of the thyroid gland after a viral illness. (12 Dec 1998) |
| endocarditis, subacute bacterial | Infection of the endocardium caused by species of streptococcus. This condition does not produce metastatic foci and if untreated may take up to a year to be fatal. (12 Dec 1998) |
| chronic idiopathic jaundice | <syndrome> An inherited disorder (autosomal recessive) that is characterised by long-standing mild jaundice. This occurs secondary to an abnormality in the transport of bilirubin from the liver to the biliary system. This leads to an accumulation of bilirubin in the liver. Avoidance of alcohol and medications which can affect the liver is important. Inheritance: autosomal recessive. (27 Sep 1997) |
| chronic idiopathic xanthomatosis | Vague or indefinite term for inherited abnormalities of lipid metabolism leading to xanthoma formation (e.g., primary familial xanthomatosis). (05 Mar 2000) |
