radius One of two bones which constitute the forearm. The largest portion of the radius is at the wrist joint where it articulates with the carpal bones of the hand. Above, the radius articulates with the humerus at the elbow joint. Bony injury (fracture) to the radius occurs most commonly at the wrist.
(27 Sep 1997)
radius fixus A line passing from the hormion to the inion.
(05 Mar 2000)
radius vector 1. <mathematics> A straight line (or the length of such line) connecting any point, as of a curve, with a fixed point, or pole, round which the straight line turns, and to which it serves to refer the successive points of a curve, in a system of polar coordinates. See Coordinate.
2. <astronomy> An ideal straight line joining the center of an attracting body with that of a body describing an orbit around it, as a line joining the sun and a planet or comet, or a planet and its satellite.

(01 Mar 1998)
carpal articular surface of radius The biconcave distal surface of the radius for articulation with the scaphoid bone laterally and the lunate medially.
Synonym: facies articularis carpi radii.
(05 Mar 2000)
posterior border of radius The ridge on the radius that extends from the tuberosity to the tubercle on the posterior aspect of the distal extremity.
Synonym: margo posterior radii.
(05 Mar 2000)
posterior surface of radius The posterior surface of the radius.
Synonym: facies posterior radii.
(05 Mar 2000)
cyclotron radius <radiobiology> Radius of orbit of charged particle about a magnetic field line.
Synonym: gyroradius, Larmor radius.
(09 Oct 1997)
head of radius The disk-shaped upper extremity articulating with the capitulum of the humerus.
Synonym: caput radii.
(05 Mar 2000)
shaft of radius The triangular body of the radius located between the expanded proximal and distal extremities of the bone.
Synonym: corpus radii.
(05 Mar 2000)

syndrome, thrombocytopenia-absent radius See Syndrome, TAR.
(12 Dec 1998)
interosseous border of radius The ridge along the medial side of the radius to which is attached the interosseous membrane.
Synonym: margo interosseus radii.
(05 Mar 2000)
orbicular ligament of radius The ligament that encircles and holds the head of the radius in the radial notch of the ulna, forming the proximal radioulnar joint and enabling pronation/supination of forearm; receives the radial collateral ligament of the elbow.
Synonym: ligamentum annulare radii, ligamentum orbiculare radii, orbicular ligament of radius.
(05 Mar 2000)
thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome <syndrome> Tar stands for thrombocytopenia (low blood platelets) and aplasia (absence) of the radius (the long bone on the thumb-side of the forearm), features characterizing this syndrome. There is phocomelia (flipper-limb) with the thumbs always present. The fibula (the smaller bone in the lower leg) is often absent. The risk of bleeding from too few platelets is high in early infancy but lessens with age. The condition is inherited in an autosomal recessive trait with one gene (on a non-sex chromosome) coming from each parent to the tar child. Alternative names include thrombocytopenia-absent radius syndrome, radial aplasia-thrombocytopenia syndrome, and tetraphocomelia-thrombocytopenia syndrome.
(12 Dec 1998)
effective collision radius <radiobiology> Effective size of a particle equal to the square root of (cross-section/pi). Determines the effective range of interaction of the particle.
