a ratio that compares the density of a forest stand to a reference stand having the "ideal" density for best growth and management. For example, if a stand has a basal area of 60 and the "ideal" fully stocked stand has a basal area of 120, our stand would be 50% stocked. Stands may be described as well stocked, understocked, or overstocked. Our example is understocked for timber production (although it may be ideal for other objectives).
