sterilization An operation designed to induce sterility. In men, usually carried out by removing small segments of each vas deferens (vasectomy); in women, usually carried out by removing, clipping or otherwise destroying a small segment of each fallopian tube, preferably close to the uterus (often called tubal ligation). sterilization A form of contraception that involves surgically blocking the release of reproductive cells. In women, the fallopian tubes are blocked so that oocytes (eggs) cannot reach the uterus. In men, the tube that carries sperm from the testicle to the penis (vas deferens) is sealed, tied or cut (vasectomy).
