| arachnoid mater encephali | An alternate term for arachnoid of brain. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| arachnoid membrane | Like a cobweb, covered with or consisting of soft fibres or hairs so entangled as to give a cobwebby appearance. (09 Oct 1997) |
| arachnoid of brain | That portion of the arachnoid which lies within the cranial cavity and surrounds the brain and the cranial portion of the subarachnoid space. In several sites it is relatively widely-separated from the pia mater, creating the cranial subarachnoid cisterns. Synonym: arachnoid mater cranialis, arachnoid mater encephali, cerebral part of arachnoid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arachnoid trabecula | Fine, delicate strands composed of fibroblast and extracellular collagen that traverse the subarachnoid space between the arachnoid mater, which is attached to the dura, and the pia mater, which is adherent to the surface of the brain. (05 Mar 2000) |
| arachnoid villi | Tufted prolongations of pia-arachnoid that protrude through the meningeal layer of the dura mater and have a thin limiting membrane; collections of arachnoid villus form arachnoid granulations that lie in venous lacunae at the margin of the superior sagittal sinus; the spongy tissue of the a. Villus contains tubules that serve as one-way valves for transfer of cerebrospinal fluid from the subarachnoid space to the venous system. Both a. Villus and the granulations formed from them are major sites of fluid transfer. See: arachnoid granulations. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pia-arachnoid | The two delicate layers of the meninges, the arachnoid mater and pia mater (vs. The tough pachymeninx or dura mater), considered together; by this concept, the arachnoid and pia are two parts of a single layer, much like the parietal and visceral layers of a serous membrane or bursa; although separated by the subarachnoid space they are connected via the arachnoid trabeculae and become continuous where the nerves and filum terminale exit the subarachnoid space (the cerebrospinal fluid-filled space bounded by the leptomeninges). See: arachnoid, pia mater. Synonym: meninx tenuis, pia-arachnoid, piarachnoid. Origin: Lepto-+ G. Meninx, pl. Meninges, membrane (05 Mar 2000) |
| accessory portion of spinal accessory nerve | <anatomy, nerve> The roots of the accessory nerve which arise from the medulla; the nerve fibres of the cranial root join the intracranial portion of the vagus nerve and are distributed to the pharyngeal plexus, providing the motor innervation of the soft palate (except the tensor veli palati) and the pharynx. Synonym: pars vagalis nervi accessorii, radices craniales, accessory portion of spinal accessory nerve, cranial roots, vagal part of accessory nerve, vagal part. (05 Mar 2000) |
| acute spinal cord compression | <radiology> Signs and symptoms of cord compression show progression within 24 hours or less: pain, weakness, autonomic dysfunction, sensory loss, ataxia Diagnostic considerations: Primary or secondary malignancy of epidural space or vertebrae, Trauma, Inflammatory process, Osteoarthritis REF: MacNeil BJ, Abrams HL. Brigham and Women's Hospital Handbook of Diagnostic Imaging. Chapter 35. (12 Dec 1998) |
| anterior median fissure of spinal cord | A deep median fissure on the anterior surface of the spinal cord. Synonym: fissura mediana anterior medullae spinalis, anteromedian groove, sulcus ventralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior spinal artery | <anatomy, artery> Origin, intracranial part of vertebral; distribution, spinal cord and pia mater; anastomoses, spinal of intercostal and lumbar arteries. Synonym: arteria spinalis anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterolateral column of spinal cord | The lateral white column of the spinal cord between the lines of exit and entrance of the anterior and posterior nerve roots. Synonym: funiculus lateralis, anterolateral column of spinal cord, lateral funiculus of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglia, spinal | Sensory ganglia located on the dorsal spinal roots within the vertebral column. The spinal ganglion cells are pseudounipolar. The single primary branch bifurcates sending a peripheral process to carry sensory information from the periphery and a central branch which relays that information to the spinal cord or brain. (12 Dec 1998) |
| ganglion cells of dorsal spinal root | Pseudounipolar nerve cell bodies in the ganglia of the dorsal spinal nerve roots; the sensory spinal nerves are composed of the peripheral axon branches of these sensory ganglion cell's, whereas the central axon branch of each such cell enters the spinal cord as a component of the dorsal root. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral primary rami of cervical spinal nerves | See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve. Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum cervicalium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ventral primary rami of lumbar spinal nerves | See: ventral primary ramus of spinal nerve. Synonym: rami ventrales nervorum lumbalium. (05 Mar 2000) |
