| spinal arteries | Branches of the following arteries which supply the meninges, the roots of the spinal nerves, and in some cases, the spinal cord: 1) vertebral, 2) ascending cervical, 3) dorsal branch of posterior intercostal I to XI, 4) dorsal branch of subcostal, 5) dorsal branch of lumbar arteries, 6) lumbar branch of iliolumbar, 7) lateral sacral; all spinal arteries give rise to radicular arteries supplying dorsal and ventral roots of spinal nerves, but some (4-9), are large enough to reach and anastomose with the anterior and posterior spinal arteries. Synonym: rami radiculares. See: medullary spinal arteries, arteria radicularis magna. Synonym: rami spinales. (05 Mar 2000) |

| posterior superior lateral nasal branches of pterygopalatine ganglion | Branches of pterygopalatine ganglion to upper posterior part of lateral wall of nasal cavity, including superior and middle nasal concha/meatuses, and posterior ethmoidal sinuses. Synonym: rami nasales posteriores superiores laterales ganglii pterygopalatini. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral branches | Branches directed away from the midline, to the side. Nomina Anatomica lists lateral branches (ramus lasteralis/rami laterales) of the following: 1) anterior interventricular artery, ramus lateralis interventricularis anterioris arteriae coronariae sinistrae; 2) anterolateral central arteries, rami laterales arteriarum centralium anterolateralium; 3) dorsal primary rami of spinal nerves, rami laterales ramorum dorsalium nervorum cervicalium/thoracalium/lumbalium/sacralium; 4) left branch of portal vein, rami laterales rami sinistri venae portae hepatis; 5) left hepatic duct, ramus lateralis ductus hepatici sinistri; 6) middle lobe branch of right pulmonary artery, ramus lateralis ramorum lobarium medium arteriorum pulmonarium dextrum; 7) supraorbital nerve, ramus lateralis nervi supraorbitalis. Synonym: rami laterales. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral calcaneal branches of sural nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branches of sural nerve providing cutaneous innervation to posterior aspect of distal leg and lateral aspect of proximal portion of foot. Synonym: rami calcanei laterales nervi suralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves | Branches arising in approximately the anterior axillary line at the level of the second through sixth intercostal spaces. Synonym: rami mammarii laterales nervorum intercostalium, lateral cutaneous branches of intercostal nerves. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral mammary branches | Branches primarily distributed to the lateral portion of the breast. Synonym: rami mammarii laterales. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral nasal branches of anterior ethmoidal nerve | <anatomy, nerve> Branches of nasociliary nerve distributed to walls of nasal cavity. Synonym: rami nasales laterales nervi ethmoidalis anterioris. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posterior lateral nasal arteries | Branches of the sphenopalatine artery that supply the posterior parts of the conchae and lateral nasal wall. Synonym: arteriae nasales posteriores laterales. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral malleolar arteries | Lateral malleolar branches of peroneal artery. Synonym: rami malleolares laterales, arteriae malleolares posteriores laterales, posterior peroneal arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral splanchnic arteries | Artery's that arise in the embryo from the dorsal aorta to supply the mesonephros, testis or ovary, and adrenal gland. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral striate arteries | Numerous small branches from the sphenoidal part of the middle cerebral arteries supplying the lateral and anterior parts of the corpus striatum. Synonym: arteriae centrales anterolaterales, arteriae thalamostriatae anterolaterales, anterolateral central arteries, anterolateral striate arteries, anterolateral thalamostriate arteries, arteries of cerebral haemorrhage, lenticulostriate arteries. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral column of spinal cord | A slight protrusion of the gray matter of the spinal cord into the lateral funiculus of either side, especially marked in the thoracic region where it encloses preganglionic motor neurons of the sympathetic division of the autonomic nervous system; it corresponds to the lateral horn appearing in transverse sections of the spinal cord. See: gray columns. Synonym: columna lateralis, lateral column of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral funiculus of spinal cord | The lateral white column of the spinal cord between the lines of exit and entrance of the anterior and posterior nerve roots. Synonym: funiculus lateralis, anterolateral column of spinal cord, lateral funiculus of spinal cord. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral spinal sclerosis | Considered by many to be a subgroup of motor neuron disease; a slowly progressive degenerative disorder of the motor neurons of the cerebral cortex, resulting in widespread weakness on an upper motor neuron basis; spasticity, hyperreflexia, and Babinski signs are present, but not fasciculation potentials, nor any electrodiagnostic evidence of a lower motor neuron lesion. Synonym: lateral spinal sclerosis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral vein of lateral ventricle | A vein draining deep portions of the temporal and parietal lobes; it runs in the lateral wall of the lateral ventricle to terminate in the superior thalamostriate vein. Synonym: vena ventriculi lateralis lateralis, lateral atrial vein, lateral vein of lateral ventricle. (05 Mar 2000) |
