| screw |
The screw is an inclined plane wrapped around a cylinder. The advantage offered by the screw is that as it turns, rotary motion is converted into a straight motion. This motion can be used to move things apart (as in a car jack), or bring two objects together (a screw drawing two boards together). These devices are screws or have a screw component: jar lid, light bulb, piano stool, clamp, jack, wrench, key ring, and corkscrew.
