scrapie The fatal brain disease that affects sheep, causing emaciation, loss of coordination and a repetitive scraping and rubbing against fixed objects. First described in England and western Europe during the 18th century, it was formally identified in Michigan in 1947, and has since shown up in other states, including Wisconsin.
