| rostra |
The large stone platform in the Forum Romanum initially used by public speakers to rouse the crowds and at a later date mostly used for official ceremonies. It was situated near the Curia under the Republic and subsequently moved farther west. It was decorated with the prows of boats captured at the Battle of Antium (338 BC), from which it got its name rostra (prows, beaks, rams or cutwaters from ships).
