| Rideal-Walker m. |
a method for testing the bactericidal activity of a disinfectant as compared with that of phenol. Cultures of Salmonella typhi are incubated with serial dilutions of the test compound, with dilutions of phenol as standards. Samples are removed at intervals, transferred to sterile broth, and the resulting cultures incubated and examined for bacterial growth. Activity is expressed as the ratio of effective concentration of test compound divided by that of phenol (phenol coefficient).
