ribose-5-phosphate isomerase [EC 5.3.1.6] an enzyme of the isomerase class that catalyzes the interconversion of ribulose 5-phosphate and ribose 5-phosphate. The reaction is part of the pentose phosphate pathway and is important in ribose metabolism.

ribose-phosphate pyrophosphokinase [EC 2.7.6.1] an enzyme of the transferase class that catalyzes the phosphorylation of ribose 5-phosphate to form phosphoribosylpyrophosphate, the initial reactant in purine and pyrimidine nucleotide biosynthesis. Enhanced enzyme activity, an X-linked recessive trait, leads to increased purine synthesis and causes primary gout. Called also phosphoribosylpyrophosphate synthetase.
