retinal 1. <anatomy> Pertaining to the retina.
2. <biochemistry> The aldehyde of retinol, derived by the oxidative enzymatic splitting of absorbed dietary carotene and having vitamin A activity. In the retina, retinal combines with opsins to form visual pigments. One isomer, 11 cis retinal combines with opsin in the rods (scotopsin) to form rhodopsin or visual purple. Another, all trans retinal (trans r.), visual yellow, xanthopsin) results from the bleaching of rhodopsin by light, in which the 11 cis form is converted to the all trans form. Retinal also combines with opsins in the cones (photopsins) to form the three pigments responsible for colour vision.

It may occur after an uncomplicated cataract extraction, but it is seen more often if vitreous humor has been lost during surgery. (Dorland, 27th ed; Newell, Ophthalmology: Principles and Concepts, 7th ed, p310-12).

retinal detachment The retina can become separated from from the inner wall of the eye. Unless it is re-attached soon, permanent vision loss will result.
Ãâó: www.geocities.com/coloboma_group/words.html
retinal rivalry When two dissimilar images fall on the corresponding areas of the retina, there is confusion due to their superimposition and there is a conflict between the two retinas. The brain therefore suppresses one of the images. If both eyes have equal dominance there is alternating suppression of these images, eg, while wearing red glass in front of one eye and green in front of the other, a plane white surface will appear red and green alternately.
Ãâó: www.geocities.com/sapatney/terminology.htm
retinal detachment Condition in which a portion of the retina becomes separated from the inner wall of the eye. In AIDS patients, it can result from retinal disease such as CMV retinitis. The condition can rapidly lead to vision loss but is treatable by adding silicone to the eye's vitreous humor to increase the pressure on the retina.
Ãâó: www.amfar.org/cgi-bin/iowa/bridge.html
retinal detachment a condition in which a layer of the retina separates from the underlying epithelium, allowing vitreous fluid to seep behind it. The condition may lead to loss of vision.
Ãâó: www.sfaf.org/treatment/beta/b36/b36glos.html
retinal detachment The falling away of the retina from its correct position at the back of the eye, which leads to a defect in the field of vision and ultimately loss of vision.
