| polydystrophic dwarfism | <biochemistry, syndrome> An error of mucopolysaccharide metabolism due to deficiency of the lysosomal enzyme arylsulphatase B. It is characterised by excretion of dermatan sulfate in the urine, growth retardation, lumbar kyphosis, sternal protrusion, genu valgum, usually hepatosplenomegaly, and no mental retardation. Onset occurs after two years of age. Inheritance: autosomal recessive. Synonym: polydystrophic dwarfism, mucopolysaccharidosis type VI. (05 Mar 2000) |

| primordial dwarfism | Dwarfism characterised by normal development that is at a strikingly lesser rate than that for members of the same family, race, or other races. Synonym: primordial dwarfism, true dwarfism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Seckel dwarfism | <syndrome> An autosomal recessive disorder characterised by low birth weight, dwarfism, microcephaly, large eyes, beaked nose, receding mandible, and moderate mental retardation. Synonym: Seckel dwarfism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| senile dwarfism | Dwarfism characterised by craniofacial anomalies with progeroid appearance. (05 Mar 2000) |
| sexual dwarfism | Dwarfism with normal sexual development. (05 Mar 2000) |
| Silver-Russell dwarfism | <syndrome> A disorder characterised by low birth weight, late closure of the anterior fontanel, bilateral bodily asymmetry, clinodactyly of the fifth fingers, triangular facies, and carp mouth; little useful genetic evidence. Synonym: Silver-Russell dwarfism. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypothyroid dwarfism | <endocrinology> Stunted body growth and mental development appearing in the first years of life resulting the inappropriate development of the thymus gland or inadequate maternal intake of iodine during gestation. (11 Jan 1998) |
| snub-nose dwarfism | Dwarfism characterised by low birth weight, snub nose, and stocky build; autosomal dominant inheritance. There is a similar autosomal recessive phenotype. Synonym: dominantly inherited Levi's disease. (05 Mar 2000) |
| diastrophic dwarfism | <radiology> Short-limbed dwarfism (diastrophic means twisted, thus scoliosis) X-ray features: short flared metaphyses with flattened epiphyses in tubular bones of extremities, equinovarus deformity of feet -- major joints subluxed, spine: kyphoscoliosis with gradual decrease in interpediculate distance toward caudal end of lumbar spine, hands, hitch-hiker's thumb - widely abducted, hypoplastic first metacarpal, other metacarpals too broad, especially at growing end, carpal bones with too many centres ossified (12 Dec 1998) |
| disproportionate dwarfism | Dwarfism in which the limbs and trunk are not of proportional length for age or stage of development. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dwarfism | A condition which results from the insufficient production of growth hormone by the pituitary gland. Dwarfism is characterised by abnormally short stature with normal body proportions occurring in childhood. Symptoms include slowed growth, short stature, delayed sexual development in the adolescent, headaches, excessive urination and excessive thirst. (27 Sep 1997) |
| dwarfism, pituitary | A form of dwarfism due to absence or hypofunction of the anterior pituitary gland. (12 Dec 1998) |
| infantile dwarfism | 1. A state marked by slow development of mind and body. Synonym: infantile dwarfism. 2. Childishness, as characterised by a temper tantrum of an adolescent or adult. 3. Underdevelopment of the sexual organs. (05 Mar 2000) |
| thanatophoric dwarfism | A lethal dwarfism characterised by micromelia, bowed long bones, enlarged head, flattened vertebral bodies, and muscular hypotonia; lack of pulmonary ventilation causes respiratory difficulties with cyanosis leading to death within the first few hours or days after birth. (05 Mar 2000) |
| true dwarfism | Dwarfism characterised by normal development that is at a strikingly lesser rate than that for members of the same family, race, or other races. Synonym: primordial dwarfism, true dwarfism. (05 Mar 2000) |
