(12 Dec 1998)
renal calculi <radiology> Common: calcium phosphate (8%), calcium oxalate (most common: 73%, most opaque), magnesium ammonium phosphate (struvite), uncommon: diammonium calcium phosphate, magnesium phosphate, rare: cystine (faintly opaque; 1%), urate (lucent; 7%), xanthine see: matrix calculi
(12 Dec 1998)
renal calculus A calculus occurring within the kidney collecting system.
Synonym: nephrolith.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal cancer <radiology> About 8300 adults die each year from kidney cancer. An estimated 18100 new cases are diagnosed each year, comprising 2% of all cancers. The average age at diagnosis is 55-60 years., adenocarcinoma (hypernephroma), 80% of renal carcinoma, 66% male, associated with smoking, transitional cell or squamous carcinoma, 15% of renal carcinoma, 50% male, associated with calculous disease Excretory urography may reveal the primary lesion, the degree of local extension and evidence of compression or deviation of the ureter. REF: Rubin P. Clinical Oncology. Chapter 17.
(12 Dec 1998)
renal capsule The fibrous connective tissue that surrounds each kidney.
(12 Dec 1998)
renal carcinosarcoma <tumour> Obsolete term for Wilms' tumour.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal cast Any type of cast formed in a renal tubule, and found in the urine consisting of various materials, e.g., albumin, cells, blood.
Synonym: tube cast.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal cell cancer Cancer that develops in the lining of the renal tubules, which filter the blood and produce urine. Also called renal cell carcinoma.
(12 Dec 1998)
renal cell carcinoma <oncology, tumour> The most common form of kidney cancer which occurs when the cells lining the renal tubule undergo cancerous changes. There are approximately 18,000 new cases of renal cell carcinoma (hypernephroma) per year in the U.S. With about 8,000 deaths annually.
Smoking is considered a major risk factor. Kidney dialysis patients are at increased risk for the development of hypernephroma. Family history for renal cell carcinoma is also considered a risk factor.
Symptoms include haematuria, flank pain, abdominal pain, back pain, weight loss and abdominal swelling.
(27 Sep 1997)
renal circulation The circulation of the blood through the vessels of the kidney.
(12 Dec 1998)
renal colic Severe colicky pain caused by the impaction or passage of a calculus in the ureter or renal pelvis.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal collar In the embryo, a ring of veins around the aorta below the origin of the superior mesenteric artery.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal columns The prolongations of cortical substance separating the pyramids of the kidney.
Synonym: columnae renales, Bertin's columns.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal corpuscle The tuft of glomerular capillaries and the capsula glomeruli that encloses it.
Synonym: corpusculum renis, malpighian corpuscles.
(05 Mar 2000)
renal cortex The part of the kidney consisting of renal lobules in the outer zone beneath the capsule and also the lobules of the renal columns that are extensions inward between the pyramids; contains the renal corpuscles and the proximal and distal convoluted tubules.
Synonym: cortex renis.

  • Renal Circulation - »õâ The circulation of the BLOOD through the vessels of the KIDNEY.
Synonyms : Circulation, Kidney, Circulation, Renal, Blood Flow, Renal, Flow, Renal Blood
  • Renal Dialysis - »õâ Therapy for the insufficient cleansing of the BLOOD by the kidneys based on dialysis and including hemodialysis, PERITONEAL DIALYSIS, and HEMODIAFILTRATION.
Synonyms : Dialyses, Extracorporeal, Dialyses, Renal, Extracorporeal Dialyses, Hemodialyses, Renal Dialyses
  • Renal Insufficiency - »õâ Conditions in which the KIDNEYS perform below the normal level in the ability to remove wastes, concentrate URINE, and maintain ELECTROLYTE BALANCE; BLOOD PRESSURE; and CALCIUM metabolism. Renal insufficiency can be classified by the degree of kidney damage (as measured by the level of PROTEINURIA) and reduction in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE. The most severe form is KIDNEY FAILURE. Renal function may deteriorate slowly (RENAL INSUFFICIENCY, CHRONIC) or precipitously (RENAL INSUFFICIENCY, ACUTE).
Synonyms : Insufficiency, Kidney, Kidney Insufficiencies, Renal Insufficiencies
  • Renal Insufficiency, Acute - »õâ Conditions in which the function of KIDNEYS deteriorates suddenly in a matter of days or even hours. It is characterized by the sudden drop in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE; (GMR). The most severe stage is when the GFR drops below 15 ml per min (ACUTE KIDNEY FAILURE).
Synonyms : Acute Kidney Insufficiency, Acute Renal Insufficiency, Acute Kidney Insufficiencies, Acute Renal Insufficiencies, Kidney Insufficiencies, Acute, Renal Insufficiencies, Acute
  • Renal Insufficiency, Chronic - »õâ Conditions in which the KIDNEYS perform below the normal level for more than three months. Chronic kidney insufficiency is classified by five stages according to the decline in GLOMERULAR FILTRATION RATE and the degree of kidney damage (as measured by the level of PROTEINURIA). The most severe form is the end-stage renal disease (CHRONIC KIDNEY FAILURE). (Kidney Foundation: Kidney Disease Outcome Quality Initiative, 2002)
