refractive index The degree to which light bends (refraction) when passing through a transparent or translucent object. For example, the refractive index of air is 1 and water is 1.33.

refractive index A measurement of the bending of a beam of light when it passes from material into another and the two materials have different densities (eg light passing from air through water is bent because air and water have different densities).

refractive index Index of Refraction, represented by a number or pair of numbers. See a book on Gemology, as this is too complex to go into here. Top of Page
