| rectus | Origin: NL, fr. L. Regere to keep straight. <anatomy> A straight muscle; as, the recti of the eye. Source: Websters Dictionary (01 Mar 1998) |

| rectus abdominis | A long flat muscle that extends along the whole length of both sides of the abdomen. It flexes the vertebral column, particularly the lumbar portion; it also tenses the anterior abdominal wall and assists in compressing the abdominal contents. It is frequently the site of haematomas. In reconstructive surgery it is often used for the creation of myocutaneous flaps. (12 Dec 1998) |
| rectus abdominis muscle | <anatomy> Muscle of ventral abdominal wall, flanking the linea alba, and characterised by tendinous intersections separating its length into multiple bellies; origin, crest and symphysis of the pubis; insertion, xiphoid process and fifth to seventh costal cartilages; action, flexes lumbar vertebral column, draws thorax downward toward pubis; nerve supply, thoracoabdominal nerves. Synonym: musculus rectus abdominis, rectus muscle of abdomen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rectus femoris | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, anterior inferior spine of ilium and upper margin of acetabulum; insertion, via common tendon of quadriceps femoris into patella, and via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity. Synonym: musculus rectus femoris, rectus muscle of thigh. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rectus muscle of abdomen | <anatomy> Muscle of ventral abdominal wall, flanking the linea alba, and characterised by tendinous intersections separating its length into multiple bellies; origin, crest and symphysis of the pubis; insertion, xiphoid process and fifth to seventh costal cartilages; action, flexes lumbar vertebral column, draws thorax downward toward pubis; nerve supply, thoracoabdominal nerves. Synonym: musculus rectus abdominis, rectus muscle of abdomen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rectus muscle of thigh | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, anterior inferior spine of ilium and upper margin of acetabulum; insertion, via common tendon of quadriceps femoris into patella, and via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity. Synonym: musculus rectus femoris, rectus muscle of thigh. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rectus sheath | Sheath of the rectus abdominis, formed by the aponeuroses of the three anterolateral muscles of the abdominal wall that split to enclose the rectus and fuse medially to form the linea alba; it consists of an anterior lamina and a posterior lamina, the latter being absent below the arcuate line. See: aponeurosis of external abdominal oblique muscle, aponeurosis of internal abdominal oblique muscle. Synonym: vagina musculi recti abdominis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| medial rectus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, medial part of the anulus tendineus communis; insertion, medial part of sclera of the eye; action, adduction; nerve supply, oculomotor. Synonym: musculus rectus medialis, musculus rectus internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| greater posterior rectus muscle of head | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, spinous process of axis; insertion, middle of inferior nuchal line of occipital bone; action, rotates and draws head backward; nerve supply, dorsal branch of first cervical (suboccipital). See: suboccipital muscles. Synonym: musculus rectus capitis posterior major, greater posterior rectus muscle of head, musculus rectus capitis posticus major. (05 Mar 2000) |
| gyrus rectus | A gyrus running along the medial part of the orbital surface of the frontal lobe of the cerebral hemisphere. It is bounded laterally by the olfactory sulcus. Synonym: gyrus rectus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus rectus abdominis | <anatomy> Muscle of ventral abdominal wall, flanking the linea alba, and characterised by tendinous intersections separating its length into multiple bellies; origin, crest and symphysis of the pubis; insertion, xiphoid process and fifth to seventh costal cartilages; action, flexes lumbar vertebral column, draws thorax downward toward pubis; nerve supply, thoracoabdominal nerves. Synonym: musculus rectus abdominis, rectus muscle of abdomen. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus rectus externus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, lateral part of the common tendinous ring that bridges superior orbital fissure; insertion, lateral part of sclera of eye; action, abduction; nerve supply, abducens. Synonym: musculus rectus lateralis, abducens oculi, musculus rectus externus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus rectus femoris | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, anterior inferior spine of ilium and upper margin of acetabulum; insertion, via common tendon of quadriceps femoris into patella, and via patellar ligament to tibial tuberosity. Synonym: musculus rectus femoris, rectus muscle of thigh. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus rectus inferior | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, inferior part of the common tendinous ring; insertion, inferior part of sclera of the eye; action, primary, depression; secondary, adduction and extorsion; nerve supply, oculomotor (inferior branch). Synonym: musculus rectus inferior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| musculus rectus internus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, medial part of the anulus tendineus communis; insertion, medial part of sclera of the eye; action, adduction; nerve supply, oculomotor. Synonym: musculus rectus medialis, musculus rectus internus. (05 Mar 2000) |
