perinatal transmission Transmission of an infectious disease, such as hepatitis B, from mother to newborn. All pregnant women should be tested for hepatitis B since newborns have a 90% chance of becoming chronically infected if they do not receive the first dose of hepatitis B vaccine and a single dose of HBIG within 12 hours after delivery. The infant will also need additional doses of hepatitis B vaccine at one and six months of age to ensure a complete immune response.
