Synonym: arcus palatopharyngeus, pharyngopalatine arch, posterior palatine arch, posterior pillar of fauces. (05 Mar 2000) |
| palatopharyngeal muscle | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, soft palate; forms the posterior pillar of the fauces or tonsillar fossa; insertion, posterior border of thyroid cartilage and aponeurosis of pharynx; action, narrows fauces, depresses soft palate, elevates pharynx and larynx; nerve supply, pharyngeal plexus (cranial root of accessory nerve). Synonym: musculus palatopharyngeus, musculus pharyngopalatinus, palatopharyngeal muscle, palatopharyngeus, pharyngopalatinus, pharyngostaphylinus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| palatopharyngeal sphincter | A constant band of the superior pharyngeal constrictor muscle which sweeps posteriorly from the anterolateral part of the superior surface of the palatine aponeurosis. It creates a visible ridge when the superior constrictor is contracted, meeting the elevated soft palate to seal off the pharyngeal isthmus during swallowing. Synonym: pharyngeal ridge, sphincter of the pharyngeal isthmus, velopharyngeal sphincter. (05 Mar 2000) |
| palatopharyngeus | <anatomy, muscle> Origin, soft palate; forms the posterior pillar of the fauces or tonsillar fossa; insertion, posterior border of thyroid cartilage and aponeurosis of pharynx; action, narrows fauces, depresses soft palate, elevates pharynx and larynx; nerve supply, pharyngeal plexus (cranial root of accessory nerve). Synonym: musculus palatopharyngeus, musculus pharyngopalatinus, palatopharyngeal muscle, palatopharyngeus, pharyngopalatinus, pharyngostaphylinus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| palatopharyngoplasty | <procedure> Surgical resection of unnecessary palatal and oropharyngeal tissue in selected cases of snoring, with or without sleep apnea. This technique has proven effective in approximately 50% of cases, when undertaken to cure sleep apnea. Pharmacological treatment of apnea generally fails to correct the problem, thus surgery has offered the best recourse in extreme cases. New mechanical devices which prevent the pharynx from collapsing also appear promising. Synonym: uvulopalatopharyngoplasty, uvulopalatoplasty. Origin: palato-+ pharynx, + plastos, formed.
