The packed cell volume (PCV) or hematocrit (Hct) is a measure of RBC numbers, expressed as a percentage of the total volume of blood. The PCV, by common usage, has become synonymous with the Hct. Traditionally the PCV is obtained by centrifuging an anticoagulated blood sample (spun crit); with automated counters this value is calculated from the measured Mean Corpuscular Volume (MCV) and RBC count.
