ozone
Ozone is a form of molecular oxygen (O 3 ); it consists of three connected oxygen atoms. OZONE LAYER The ozone layer is a region of the stratosphere which contains most (about 90%) of the Earth's atmospheric ozone. It is about 10-25 miles (15-40 km) above the Earth's surface. The ozone layer shields the Earth from Ultraviolet B rays that come from the Sun. The ozone layer is becoming depleted, and there is an "ozone hole" over Antarctica.

ozone
A molecule made up of three atoms of oxygen. Occurs naturally in the stratosphere and provides a protective layer shielding the Earth from harmful ultraviolet radiation. In the troposphere, it is a chemical oxidant, a greenhouse gas, and a major component of photochemical smog.

Ozone (O3) is the highly-reactive, triatomic from of oxygen. However, unlike diatomic oxygen (also known as oxygen gas, O2), which is odorless and colorless, ozone has a strong scent and is blue in color. Furthermore, diatomic oxygen is significantly more common; the ratio of O2:O3 molecules in the atmosphere is aproximately 2,000,000:3.

ozone
A form of oxygen, O3. A powerful oxidizing agent that is considered a pollutant in the lower troposphere but an essential chemical in the stratosphere where it protects the earth from high-energy ultraviolet radiation from the sun.
