| ovine progressive p. |
a chronic viral disease of sheep caused by a retrovirus, characterized by progressive weight loss and dyspnea that can be fatal. A demyelinating meningoencephalitis may occur, with paresis of the hind limbs progressing to total paralysis and death. The respiratory form is also called maedi and the meningoencephalitic form visna; maedi-visna is used to describe the entire syndrome.
