the contraction of the hand in tetany, flexed at the wrist with fingers at the metacarpophalangeal joints but extended at the interphalangeal joints, the thumb being strongly flexed into the palm; so called because of a dubious resemblance to the position assumed by the hand of the obstetrician when examining the vagina.
