| geniculatus lateralis nucleus | The lateral one of a pair of small oval masses that protrude slightly from the posteroinferior aspects of the thalamus; its main (dorsal) subdivision serves as a processing station in the major pathway from the retina to the cerebral cortex, receiving fibres from the optic tract and giving rise to the geniculocalcarine radiation to the visual cortex in the occipital lobe. Synonym: corpus geniculatum laterale, corpus geniculatum externum. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| nucleus lateralis medullae oblongatae | A group of cells in the medulla oblongata, located between the inferior olive and the descending trigeminal nucleus, receiving fibres from the spinal cord and motor cortex and projecting to the cerebellum. Synonym: nucleus lateralis medullae oblongatae, lateral reticular nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus lemnisci lateralis | A substantial cell mass embedded in the lateral lemniscus, immediately below the latter's entry into the inferior colliculus; the nucleus represents a synaptic way-station for part of the fibres of the lateral lemniscus. Synonym: nucleus lemnisci lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus preopticus lateralis | A vaguely defined group of nerve cells in the lateral zone of the preoptic region. Synonym: nucleus preopticus lateralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nucleus ventralis lateralis | The composite middle third of the ventral nucleus receiving in its various parts distinctive projections from the contralateral half of the cerebellum (by way of the superior cerebellar peduncle) and the ipsilateral globus pallidus; nearly all parts of the nucleus projects to the motor cortex. Synonym: nucleus ventralis intermedius thalami, nucleus ventralis lateralis, ventral lateral nucleus of thalamus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pedunculus thalami inferior | A large fibre bundle emerging from the anterior part of the thalamus in the ventral direction, in part joining the medial fibres of the internal capsule, in other part curving laterally around the medial margin of the capsule into the innominate substance. Many of its fibres establish a reciprocal connection of the mediodorsal nucleus of the thalamus with the orbital gyri of the frontal lobe, but numerous other fibres constitute a conduction system from the amygdala and olfactory cortex to the mediodorsal nucleus. See: ansa peduncularis. Synonym: pedunculus thalami inferior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pedunculus thalami ventralis | The massive system of fibre bundles emerging through the ventral, lateral, and anterior borders of the thalamus to join the internal capsule and parts of the corona radiata; it contains the fibres reciprocally connecting the ventral thalamic nuclei with the precentral and postcentral gyri of the cerebral cortex. Synonym: pedunculus thalami ventralis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| stria medullaris thalami | A narrow, compact fibre bundle that extends along the line of attachment of the roof of the third ventricle to the thalamus on each side and terminates posteriorly in the habenular nucleus. It is composed of fibres originating in the septal area, the anterior perforated substance, the lateral preoptic nucleus, and the medial segment of the globus pallidus. Synonym: stria medullaris thalami, stria fornicis, stria ventriculi tertii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nuclei anteriores thalami | Collective term for three groups of nerve cells which together form the anterior thalamic tubercle: the anteroventral nuclei, a relatively large nucleus; the anteromedial nuclei; and the anterodorsal nuclei, a small (but large-celled) nucleus. The nuclei receive the mamillothalamic tract from the mamillary body, and additional afferents by way of the fornix; they project collectively to the cortex of the cingulate and parahippocampal gyrus. Synonym: nuclei anteriores thalami. (05 Mar 2000) |
| nuclei intralaminares thalami | Collective term denoting several cell groups embedded in the internal medullary lamina of the thalamus: central lateral nucleus, paracentral nucleus, and farthest caudally, the large centromedian nucleus. The first two of these receive afferents from the cerebral cortex, brainstem, reticular formation, cerebellum, and spinal cord, and project more or less diffusely to large regions of the frontal and parietal cortex. See: centromedian nucleus. Synonym: nuclei intralaminares thalami. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tenia thalami | The sharp edge or angle between the superior and medial surface of the thalamus on either side; to it is attached the epithelial lamina forming the roof of the third ventricle. Synonym: tenia ventriculi tertii, thalamic tenia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tuberculum anterius thalami | anterior thalamic tubercle |
| laminae medullares thalami | Layers of myelinated fibres that appear on transverse sections of the thalamus; the lamina medullaris externa marks the ventral and lateral borders of the thalamus and delimits it from the subthalamus and reticular nucleus of thalamus; the lamina medullaris interna is interposed between the mediodorsal and ventral nuclei of the thalamus and encloses the intralaminar nuclei (centromedian, paracentral, and central lateral nuclei). Synonym: laminae medullares thalami, medullary layers of thalamus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| angulus lateralis scapulae | The blunt, concave head of the scapula forming the glenoid cavity at the junction of the superior and lateral borders of the bone. Synonym: angulus lateralis scapulae. (05 Mar 2000) |
| angulus oculi lateralis | The angle formed by the junction of the lateral parts of the upper and lower eyelids. Synonym: angulus oculi lateralis, angulus oculi temporalis, external canthus, lateral canthus. (05 Mar 2000) |
