| AHPO | anterior hypothalamic preoptic [area] |
| LHA | lateral hypothalamic area; left hepatic artery |
| POA-HA | preoptic anterior hypothalamic area |
| DMNL | dorsomedial hypothalamic nucleus lesion |
| anterior hypothalamic region | The rostral portion of the hypothalamus that includes preoptic, supraoptic, paraventricular and anterior hypothalamic nuclei; the hypothalamic structures located internally in the general area of the optic chiasm. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| posterior hypothalamic region | Caudal portions of the hypothalamus located internally in the area of the mamillary body, includes medial, intermediate, and lateral mamillary nuclei and the posterior hypothalamic nuclei. Synonym: posterior hypothalamic area. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypothalamic | Of or involving the hypothalamus. (18 Nov 1997) |
| hypothalamic amenorrhoea | Secondary amenorrhoea arising from defective hypothalamic stimulation of the anterior lobe of the hypophysis. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypothalamic histiocytoma | <radiology> Parasellar tumour, may not be able to differentiate from: suprasellar (optic nerve/chiasm) glioma, teratoma, kids with tumour usually have, diabetes insipidus, skeletal lesions of histiocytosis (12 Dec 1998) |
| hypothalamic hormones | Hormones isolated from the hypothalamus which exercise control over other organs, primarily the pituitary gland. Well-known members include certain pituitary hormone-releasing hormones and pituitary hormone release inhibiting hormones. Vasopressin and oxytocin which are found in the posterior pituitary may also be secreted by the hypothalamus but are not grouped here (pituitary hormones, posterior). (12 Dec 1998) |
| hypothalamic infundibulum | The apical portion of the tuber cinereum extending into the stalk of the hypophysis. Synonym: infundibulum hypothalami. (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypothalamic neoplasms | Neoplasms located in the hypothalamus including the anterior, medial, and posterior portions. (12 Dec 1998) |
| hypothalamic obesity with hypogonadism | A disorder characterised primarily by obesity and hypogonadotrophic hypogonadism in adolescent boys; dwarfism is rare, and when present is thought to reflect hypothyroidism. Visual loss, behavioural abnormalities, and diabetes insipidus may occur. Frohlich's syndrome often is used synonymously for this disorder, although the original case involved a pituitary tumour; most cases are thought to result from hypothalamic dysfunction in areas regulating appetite and gonadal development. The most common causes are pituitary and hypothalamic neoplasms. Synonym: adiposis orchica, adiposogenital degeneration, adiposogenital dystrophy, adiposogenital syndrome, hypophysial syndrome, hypothalamic obesity with hypogonadism. Origin: L. Fr. G. Dys-, bad, + trophe, nourishment (05 Mar 2000) |
| hypothalamic sulcus | A groove in the lateral wall of the third ventricle on either side leading from the interventricular foramen to the aditus ad aqueductum cerebri; the sulcus-demarcated boundary between dorsal thalamus and hypothalamus. Synonym: sulcus hypothalamicus, Monro's sulcus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dorsal hypothalamic region | The portion of the hypothalamus located immediately ventral to the hypothalamic sulcus; contains small nuclei, some of which are associated with the ansa lenticularis and the entopeduncular nucleus. (05 Mar 2000) |
| lateral hypothalamic region | Extends throughout most of the rostrocaudal extent of the hypothalamus lateral to the column of the fornix; includes lateral tuberal nuclei, tuberomamillary nuclei, and diffuse populations of cells. Synonym: lateral hypothalamic area. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior intermediate groove | A furrow occasionally seen in the adult between the anterior median fissure and the anterior lateral sulcus of the spinal cord but usually present only in the foetus. It indicates the lateral border of the anterior corticospinal fasciculus. Synonym: anterior intermediate groove, sulcus intermedius anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| anterior intermediate sulcus | A furrow occasionally seen in the adult between the anterior median fissure and the anterior lateral sulcus of the spinal cord but usually present only in the foetus. It indicates the lateral border of the anterior corticospinal fasciculus. Synonym: anterior intermediate groove, sulcus intermedius anterior. (05 Mar 2000) |
| ganglion of intermediate nerve | The sensory ganglion of the facial (7th cranial) nerve. The geniculate ganglion cells send central processes to the brainstem and peripheral processes to the taste buds in the anterior tongue, the soft palate, and the skin of the external auditory meatus and the mastoid process.
