  • Myelin Sheath - »õâ The lipid-rich sheath surrounding AXONS in both the central and peripheral nervous systems. The myelin sheath is an electrical insulator and allows faster and more energetically efficient conduction of impulses. The sheath is formed by the cell membranes of glial cells (SCHWANN CELLS in the peripheral and OLIGODENDROGLIA in the central nervous system). Deterioration of the sheath in DEMYELINATING DISEASES is a serious clinical problem.
Synonyms : Myelin Sheaths, Sheath, Myelin, Sheaths, Myelin
  • Myelin-Associated Glycoprotein - »õâ A myelin protein found in the periaxonal membrane of both the central and peripheral nervous systems myelin sheaths. It has a structure that is similar to members of the Ig superfamily that participate in cell adhesion. (From Siegel et al., Basic Neurochemistry, 5th ed, p132)
Synonyms : L-MAG, Large Myelin-Associated Glycoprotein Isoform, Pleural Glycoproteins, S-MAG, Small Myelin-Associated Glycoprotein Isoform, Glycoprotein, Myelin-Associated, Glycoproteins, Pleural, L MAG, Large Myelin Associated Glycoprotein Isoform, Protein, MAG, S MAG
  • Myelinolysis, Central Pontine - »õâ A demyelinating condition affecting the PONS and characterized clinically by an acute progressive QUADRIPLEGIA; DYSARTHRIA; DYSPHAGIA; and alterations of consciousness. Pathologic features include prominent demyelination in the central PONS with sparing of axons and neurons. This condition is usually associated with systemic disorders such as HYPONATREMIA; chronic ALCOHOLISM; LIVER FAILURE; severe BURNS; malignant NEOPLASMS; hemorrhagic PANCREATITIS; HEMODIALYSIS; and SEPSIS. The rapid medical correction of hyponatremia has been cited as a cause of this condition. (From Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1125-6)
Synonyms : Extrapontine Myelinoclasis, Myelinoclasis, Central Pontine, Pontine Myelinolysis, Central, Central Pontine Myelinoclasis, Extrapontine Myelinoclases, Extrapontine Myelinolyses, Myelinoclases, Extrapontine, Myelinoclasis, Extrapontine
  • Myelitis - »õâ Inflammation of the spinal cord. Relatively common etiologies include infections; AUTOIMMUNE DISEASES; SPINAL CORD; and ischemia (see also SPINAL CORD VASCULAR DISEASES). Clinical features generally include weakness, sensory loss, localized pain, incontinence, and other signs of autonomic dysfunction.
Synonyms : Infectious Myelitis, Inflammation, Spinal Cord, Subacute Necrotising Myelitis, Inflammations, Spinal Cord, Inflammatory Myelopathies, Inflammatory Myelopathy, Myelitides, Myelitis, Infectious, Myelitis, Subacute Necrotising, Myelopathies, Inflammatory
  • Myelitis, Transverse - »õâ Inflammation of a transverse portion of the spinal cord characterized by acute or subacute segmental demyelination or necrosis. The condition may occur sporadically, follow an infection or vaccination, or present as a paraneoplastic syndrome (see also ENCEPHALOMYELITIS, ACUTE DISSEMINATED). Clinical manifestations include motor weakness, sensory loss, and incontinence. (Adams et al., Principles of Neurology, 6th ed, pp1242-6)
Synonyms : Myelitis, Acute Transverse, Myelitis, Necrotizing, Myelitis, Paraneoplastic, Myelitis, Postinfectious, Myelitis, Postvaccinal, Myelitis, Subacute Transverse, Postinfectious Myelitis, Transverse Myelopathy Syndrome, Acute Transverse Myelitis
