| monogenic disorder |
a disorder which is caused by mutations in just one gene (such as hemophilia), as opposed to polygenic disorders (such as hypertension) which involve the interaction of several genes. Monogenic disorders are also known as "single-gene disorders," or as "Mendelian disorders" because their inheritance patterns tend to follow the genetic laws first described by Gregor Mendel.
