| pericarditis, tuberculous | Infection of the pericardium with tubercle bacilli. This condition arises by contiguous extension of tuberculous lesions of the hilar or mediastinal lymph nodes or by pleuropulmonary tuberculosis. (12 Dec 1998) |

| pericarditis villosa | Acute pericarditis with fibrinous exudate. See: bread-and-butter pericardium. Synonym: hairy heart, pericarditis villosa, shaggy pericardium. (05 Mar 2000) |
| pericarditis with effusion | Pericardial inflammation producing excess pericardial fluid. (05 Mar 2000) |
| rheumatic pericarditis | Fibrinous pericarditis occurring in acute rheumatic fever. (05 Mar 2000) |
| chronic constrictive pericarditis | Tuberculous or other infection of the pericardium, with thickening of the membrane and constriction of the cardiac chambers. (05 Mar 2000) |
| constrictive pericarditis | <pathology> Chronic inflammation of the pericardial sac (pericarditis) can lead to scarring and fibrosis of the pericardium. Due to this process, the pericardium can interfere with the hearts ability to pump blood into the systemic circulation. Causes include tuberculosis infection, radiation therapy, cardiac surgery, viral infection or autoimmune disease. Symptoms are those of right-sided congestive heart failure. Surgery to cut the pericardium may be necessary. Complications include cardiac tamponade and pulmonary oedema. See: pericardial sac. (27 Sep 1997) |
| postmyocardial infarction pericarditis | <pathology> Inflammation of the pericardium. (18 Nov 1997) |
| postpericardiotomy pericarditis | <cardiology> A syndrome characterised by fever, substernal chest pain, and pericardial rub following cardiac surgery. (05 Mar 2000) |
| posttraumatic pericarditis | Pericardial inflammation developing following injury to the chest. (05 Mar 2000) |
| haemorrhagic pericarditis | Pericarditis with bloodstained effusion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| purulent pericarditis | Pericarditis, usually bacterial, with pus in the sac. (05 Mar 2000) |
| dry pericarditis | Pericardial inflammation in the absence of demonstrable pericardial effusion. (05 Mar 2000) |
| internal adhesive pericarditis | Extensive adhesion between parietal and visceral layers of the pericardium with partial or complete obliteration of the pericardial cavity. Synonym: internal adhesive pericarditis, synechia pericardii. (05 Mar 2000) |
| obliterating pericarditis | Complete obliteration by postinflammatory adhesions of the pericardial cavity. (05 Mar 2000) |
| tuberculous pericarditis | Pericarditis caused by tuberculosis infection. (05 Mar 2000) |
