| mixed expired gas | <physiology> One or more complete breaths of expired gas coming thoroughly mixed from the dead space and the alveoli. (05 Mar 2000) |
|---|---|
| mixed function oxidases | <enzyme> Catalyse the insertion of one oxygen atom of molecular oxygen into the organ substrate. Require a second substrate to donate electrons for the reduction of the second atom in the oxygen molecule to water. Registry number: EC 1.13.12. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mixed gland | A gland that contains both serous and mucous secretory units, a gland that is both exocrine and endocrine, e.g., the pancreas. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed glioma | <tumour> A glioma comprised of two or more malignant elements, most frequently astrocytoma and oligodendroglioma. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed hyperlipaemia | Hyperlipoproteinaemia characterised by increased plasma levels of chylomicrons, VLDL, pre-beta-lipoproteins, and triglycerides, and slight rise of cholesterol on a normal diet, with beta-lipoproteins normal; may be accompanied by bouts of abdominal pain, hepatosplenomegaly, susceptibility to atherosclerosis, and abnormal glucose tolerance; probably autosomal recessive inheritance. Synonym: combined fat-and carbohydrate-induced hyperlipaemia, familial hyperchylomicronaemia with hyperprebetalipoproteinaemia, mixed hyperlipaemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed hyperlipidemia | mixed hyperlipoproteinaemia familial, type 5 hyperlipidemia |
| mixed hyperlipoproteinaemia familial | Type 5 hyperlipidemia, elevations of VLDL and chylomicrons found in plasma. Synonym: mixed hyperlipidemia. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed hypoglycaemia | Hypoglycaemia due to more than one cause. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed infection | Infection by more than one variety of pathogenic microorganisms. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed lymphocyte culture | <investigation> Test to determine whether a patients and donor's white blood cells interact adversely. Often used to determine whether a person would be a suitable bone marrow donor for a particular patient. (16 Dec 1997) |
| mixed lymphocyte culture test | Measure of histocompatibility at the hl-a locus. Peripheral blood lymphocytes from two individuals are mixed together in tissue culture for several days. Lymphocytes from incompatible individuals will stimulate each other to proliferate significantly (measured by tritiated thymidine uptake) whereas those from compatible individuals will not. In the one-way mlc test, the lymphocytes from one of the individuals are inactivated (usually by treatment with mitomycin c or radiation) thereby allowing only the untreated remaining population of cells to proliferate in response to foreign histocompatibility antigens. (12 Dec 1998) |
| mixed lymphocyte reaction | <haematology, immunology, investigation> Reaction of mitogenesis produced in T lymphocytes when allogeneic (i.e. Mixed) lymphocytes are brought together, provided they are mismatched in histocompatibility loci. Once used as a test for possible graft compatibility in human grafting. Now known that a negative reaction is a poor predictor of graft acceptance. (18 Nov 1997) |
| mixed mesodermal tumour | A sarcoma of the body of the uterus arising in older women, composed of more than one mesenchymal tissue, especially including striated muscle cells. Synonym: malignant mixed mullerian tumour. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed nerve | <anatomy, nerve> A nerve containing both afferent and efferent fibres. (05 Mar 2000) |
| mixed opioid agonist-antagonist | <pharmacology> A compound that has an affinity for two or more types of opioid receptors and blocks opioid effects on one receptor type while producing opioid effects on a second receptor type. (13 Nov 1997) |
