Micromanipulation techniques to assist fertilization include injection of a single sperm into an egg (intracytoplasmic sperm injection, ICSI). Micromanipulation techniques to enhance implantation before the embryo transfer is assisted hatching. Assisted hatching is a procedure in which the zona pellucida (outer covering) of the embryo is thinned, usually by injection of acid.
