| MAPs | Microtubule-associated proteins, may form part of the electron lucent zone around a microtubule. MAP1A and 1B approximately 350 kD) from brain, form projections from microtubules, MAP2A and 2B (270 kD) are also from brain microtubules and form projections. MAP3 (180 kD) and MAP4 (220-240 kD) have been described as co purifying with MAPs 1 and 2. Microtubule-associated protein 2 is associated with axonal processes of vertebrate nerve cells and its presence distinguishes them from dendritic processes. MAP1C is in a separate class, being a motor molecule. (18 Nov 1997) |
| fate map | <embryology> Diagram of an early embryo (usually a blastula) showing which tissues the cells in each region will give rise to (i.e. Their developmental fate). Fate maps are normally constructed by labelling small groups of cells in the blastula with vital dyes and seeing which tissues are stained when the embryo develops. (18 Nov 1997) |

In computing, an associative array, also known as a map, lookup table, or dictionary, is an abstract data type very closely related to the mathematical concept of a function with a finite domain. Conceptually, an associative array is composed of a collection of keys and a collection of values, and each key is associated with one value. ...

| maple |
Maples are trees of the genus Acer in the Order Sapindales, variously classified in a family of their own Aceraceae, or (together with the Hippocastanaceae) in Sapindaceae; genetic evidence points to the latter being the more accurate option. They are distinguished by opposite leaf arrangement, with usually palmately lobed, or occasionally pinnate or unlobed leaves. The flowers are regular, pentamerous, and borne in racemes, corymbs, or umbels. ...

| mapping function |
A mathematical expression relating observed recombination fraction (qv) to map distance expressed in centiMorgans. Two common mapping functions are those developed by Haldane (1919; J. Genet., 8: 299-309) and Kosambi (1944; Ann. Eugen., 12: 172-175). ...

| map distance |
The standard measure of distance between loci, expressed in centiMorgans (cM). Estimated from recombination fraction via a mapping function (qv). For small recombination fractions, map distance equals the percentage of recombination (recombination frequency) betwen two genes. 1% recombination = 1 cM. Sometimes called a map unit.
