| malaria, cerebral | A condition that is most commonly seen as a severe complication of malaria, falciparum mainly involving the brain. It has also been reported to occur as a result of infection with other plasmodium species. This disease is often fatal and presents as disturbances in consciousness ranging from somnolence to coma, major motor seizures, and organic psychosis. | malaria, falciparum | The most dangerous type of malaria. Persons carrying the sickle cell gene have some protection against malaria. Persons with a gene for haemoglobin c (another abnormal haemoglobin like sickle haemoglobin), thalassaemia trait or deficiency of the enzyme glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (g6pd) are thought also to have partial protection against malaria.
