loop A protein loop is any stretch of nonregular polypeptide chain connecting secondary structures. Short loop regions adopt a restricted set of conformations and loop families have been recognised in specific supersecondary structures. (eg beta-hairpins). Long loops may be extended or form omega loops. A number of different loop families have since been identified.
